We've all heard it at some point: "Don't eat too much sugar, you'll get a cavity." But cavities aren't caused by sugar, at least not directly. They're caused by a bacteria called Strep mutans, and the easiest way to picture it is termites in wood.

S. mutans is an acid-producing bacterium that thrives on sugar. Over time, the acid it produces breaks down enamel. Once it breaks through the tooth's outer shell, it goes deeper, and you have a real problem on your hands.

For a hundred years, we had no way to remove that bacteria. There's a lot of good bacteria in your mouth too, and nothing could tell them apart. So instead of going after the termites, we focused on patching up the wood.

But that's damage control, not prevention.

Fluoride Strengthens The Wood

That's what fluoride was built for. It hardens the outer shell of the tooth so the bugs have a harder time eating through it.

I want to be clear, because a lot of people online won't be: fluoride works. It works well. I still believe that.

But strengthening wood doesn't fix existing holes. They're still in there, and the termites are still chewing. Given enough time, they get through.

Nano-Hydroxyapatite Strengthens and Refills The Holes

This is the future of remineralization. nHAp is the same mineral your enamel is made of, so when the bugs eat a small hole, it fills the hole back in with your tooth's own material (hydroxyapatite).

At 10% and nano particle size, it's proven to support enamel at least as well as fluoride, if not better. Most brands use one to three percent, or use micro particles too large to get into the enamel tubules. That doesn't work. Zero and Zero Pro both use 10% nanohydroxyapatite to rebuild enamel.
