That White Patch Is Not A Stain.

In dentistry we call it an incipient lesion. Decalcification. It's the stage before a cavity, and you can see it because the enamel turns chalky white.

Here's what happened: Mineral actually got removed from your enamel. It didn't get covered up or dyed, it's gone. That's why the spot looks lighter than the tooth around it.

A cavity is the same process a few steps further along, after it's breaks through the enamel into the dentin underneath. So a white spot is actually damage in the early stages.

Why Braces Cause White Spots

Brackets and wires give food somewhere to hide, and no amount of careful brushing gets all of it.

Strep mutans is the bacteria behind cavities, and it eats what's left behind. Then it produces acid, and that acid pulls mineral out of the enamel right around each bracket. That's why the spots show up in that squared-off pattern after debonding. You're seeing the outline of where the bracket sat and where the bacteria did their work.

Add soda to that and you're feeding the process twice, once with sugar and once with acid.

This is where most people waste money. Whitening works on the surface of the tooth. Decalcification is a mineral problem underneath the surface. Bleach the tooth and you often bleach the healthy enamel too, so the contrast doesn't improve much.
